Scope and Contents
Collection contains five scrapbooks (1948-1966) that chronicle the early days of the Chicago Resettlers Committee and its metamorphosis into the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC). Clippings, in Japanese and English, document organizational and personnel changes, the explosive growth of the Japanese American community in Chicago, noteworthy achievements, biographical profiles, obituaries, cultural and social events.

Scrapbook primarily contains clippings in Japanese and English; of note are: “Minutes of a General Meeting” 1949; articles about a special dinner to honor Harry Mayeda, former president of the Chicago Resettlers Committee; a 1950 Chicago Tribune article about the Japanese American population boom in Chicago – according to the article, there were 390 individuals of Japanese descent living in Chicago in 1941 and, by 1950, the population had risen to 20,000; a 1950 article that profiles Dr. Setsuko Nishi, one of the founders of the Chicago Resettlers Committee; scrapbook is in poor condition; pages disbound and many clippings detached from pages
