“One Heaven, Four Seas” Artifact, 1944

Scope and Contents

Piece of wood (24 ¼ x 4 ½”) that has been painted and shellacked; illustration of wave and Buddhist saying “One Heaven, Four Seas” is present in Japanese; label on back reads “1944 Relic from Camp Rohwer; Throw away piece of tree cut and sanded and had an artist paint the waves and rock [and] another artist do the calligraphy; Kobayashi Family; Apt. 12 12 C”; wood is reinforced with metal ties; drill hole present at top; paint scraped off in sections; Mr. Ikeda is identified as the carpenter; Mr. Ryozo Ogura painted the wave and the calligrapher is unknown
