Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Kameoka Tamada collection contains scrapbooks that document Ruby’s time at the Cook County School of Nursing and her employment at Cook County Hospital (CCH), the theatrical and social events that she attended, newspaper clippings related to CCH and medical procedures, hand-crafted gifts from patients, greeting cards to celebrate holidays, newsletters from Colorado, matchbooks, correspondence from friends stationed domestically and abroad during WWII, communications from the Illinois State Nurses association, ticket stubs and programs from a variety of Chicago events. The collection also includes the Chicago Japanese American Yearbook, which contains profiles of prominent Japanese Americans, advertisements for businesses and events, and a directory of all Japanese Americans residing in Chicago.

Disbound scrapbook with black covers; scrapbook pages are very brittle and in poor condition; some items have detached from the scrapbook pages and are now housed in a folder entitled “Loose Material” which can be found in box 2, folder 3; nameplate is present on interior cover which reads “Ruby Mitsuye Kameoka, R.N.”; 119 pages; pages contain newspaper clippings related to Japanese Americans, the war effort, Cook County Hospital (CCH), medical procedures and classmates; pages also contain ephemera, such as ticket stubs and programs from theatrical performances, reviews, fliers from the Aragon Ballroom, vacation slips from CCH, vaccination slips from CCH, and invitations; numbered pages contain the following items of note: 23. Handmade invitation to graduation reception on May 30, 1941 in Rocky Ford, Colorado; 27. Northwestern University commencement program; 35. Article with profiles about local Japanese American families and an article about the 400 people of Japanese descent living in Chicago; 36. Reactions to WWII; 43. Correspondence from Pueblo, Colorado; 44. Tucked into program is a handwritten document entitled Adjustment to wartime needs; 47.-48. Blackout test at CCH; 53. Patient Leo Nagele [spelling?] dedicates a handwritten song/poem to Ruby; 55. Sgt. Tech. Hoichi Kubo; 60. Article on Japanese American soldiers at Camp McCoy; many articles from “Kubo” regarding war effort, soldiers are identified; 66. Ruby is elected to serve as “Recording Secretary” on December 12, 1942; 81. Thank you from patient William Pike; 99. Hand drawn monogram sketch from patient; 102.
