Biographical / Historical

James “Jim” Michio Mayeda (1920-2003) was interned at the Gila River Relocation Center, Arizona shortly after World War II began. On May 24, 1943, the War Relocation Authority granted Mayeda a “Citizen’s Indefinite Leave” so that he could be inducted into the United States military. Mayeda became a member of the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A and was initially stationed at Camp Shelby. After training, he was sent to Italy, France and Germany. Mayeda was present for the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany and his military service concluded on January 14, 1946.
