Biographical / Historical
Hideshi “Jack” Oda was born August 28, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jack had one older and one younger sister. Their Issei parents Tsunetaro (died 1987) and Yoshiko (died 1964) owned a restaurant before entering the Pomona Assembly Center and Heart Mountain. Although The Odas often worked 16 hour days to keep their businesses afloat, they only “left camp with $50 and a one way ticket to Chicago to begin a new life.” Jack married Toshiko Ando on June 14, 1953. They had six children together: David, Paul, Robert, Jane, Nancy (Takagi), and Daniel.
Toshiko Ando-Oda was born on July 20, 1930 in Los Angeles, California. Toshiko lived in Long Beach, California before being sent to the Santa Anita Assembly Center, Granada Relocation Project (Amache-Granada, Colorado) with Masako and Tomokichi, her mother and father, and brothers John and Kenji “George.” Toshiko passed away May 11, 2005.
