Biographical / Historical

Kimiyo “Kimi” Enta was a classically trained Japanese dancer who taught folk dance classes at both the Japanese American Service Committee and the Buddhist Temple of Chicago (BTC). Kimi was born in Japan in 1924 to Tomo and Junichi Kiyohiro. After emigrating from Japan, the family eventually settled in Portland, Oregon where her parents established a barber shop.
Kimi, who passed away in 2006, was married to Chinoree “Ben” Enta. Ben, a retired chemist for the Chicago Water Department, established the Chinoree and Kimiyo Enta Japan House Endowment at the University of Illinois. This gift is used to endow scholarships and fellowships in microbiology and chemistry and also provides funds for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
