Biographical / Historical

Reverend Chiaki Kuzuhara (1910-2002) met and married his wife, Kate Mieko (1913- 1996), while interned at the Granada Relocation Center (also known as Amache) in Colorado during World War II. After being released from internment, the couple resettled in Chicago and Reverend Kuzuhara became the pastor of Lakeside Japanese Christian Church, a position which he held for 49 years. The church was founded by his father, Reverend Sadaichi Kuzuhara.
Kate Mieko was a skillful artist and worked as a teacher in the Granada Relocation Center. After she and her husband moved to Chicago, she pursued a master’s degree in social work and worked as a social worker and as a community activist. Kate continued to create art for the duration of her life and was an early member of the Japanese American Service Committee in Chicago.
