Scope and Contents
This collection consists of published works by Dr. Tetsuya Fujita, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The bulk of materials relate to the topic of meteorology.

Biographical / Historical
Tetsuya Fujita was born in Kitakyushu, Japan in October 23, 1920. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1943 form Meiji Collage of Technology in Tokyo, Japan. He became an assistant professor there in the physics department in 1944. After earning his doctoral degree from Tokyo University in 1953, he then moved to the United States and joined the meteorology department at the University of Chicago. In 1955 -1956 he returned to Japan to obtain an immigration visa and then returned to the University of Chicago. In 1968 he became a U.S. citizen and took the name "Theodore" as his middle name. He stayed at the University of Chicago until his death in 1998 at the age of 78.
Tesuya Fujita was a "meteorologist who created the Fujita Scale, or F-Scale, a system of classifying tornado intensity based on damage to structures and vegetation. He also discovered macrobursts and microbursts, weather phenomena that are associated with severe thunderstorms and are hazards to aviation."
