Scope and Contents

Collection contains documents related to Hiro Mayeda’s involvement with the Chicago Nisei Post No. 1183 (1959-1999). Material includes booklets published to honor the Nisei Post’s special anniversaries, as well as correspondence, planning documents and newsletters. Papers also include correspondence, agendas, notes and minutes related to Mayeda’s leadership of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and the Japanese Mutual Aid Society of Chicago (JMAS) (1990-2000). Of note is Mayeda’s collection of military scrip and an article that appeared in a 1958 issue of Newsweek magazine that profiled Mayeda along with another Chicagoan, Kenji Nakane.

Biographical / Historical

Hiroshi “Hiro” Mayeda was born on June 12, 1925 in Compton, California to Sho and Yaye Mayeda. During World War II, the Mayeda family was sent to Santa Anita Assembly Center and then they were permanently interned in Jerome Relocation Center in Arkansas. Hiro finished his high school education in Jerome and then accompanied his mother and siblings to Granada Relocation Center (also known as Amache).
In 1944, Hiro enlisted in the U.S. Army and was involved in the occupation of Japan after World War II concluded. After he was honorably discharged, Hiro enrolled in the undergraduate program at the University of Utah and obtained a degree in 1949. Upon graduating, Hiro decided to resettle in Chicago, Illinois where there were ample opportunities for employment. In 1950, he married his wife Chiyeko “Sue” (1926-2011) and they went on to have three children – Linda (1952-2002), Gene (1954-) and Kathy (1956-).
Hiro was an active member and leader of many organizations including the Chicago Nisei Post No. 1183, Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the Japanese Mutual Aid Society of Chicago (JMAS) and the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society (CJAHS). He was also involved in the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC).
